The department 340e operates the vineyard of the University of Hohenheim. The Hohenheim vineyard has an area of about 2 hectares with with a focus on new grapevine cultivars (PiWi) of the last 3 decades, which are resistant to fungal diseases. Mainly new grape varieties (PiWi fungus resistant grape varieties or Pioneering Wines) are cultivated and both - suitability in cultivation and performance in climate change are researched. Biotic factors such as the influence of fungal diseases and their early detection (mildew, botrytis) on the grapevine are also being studied. Furthermore, there is a grapevine repository with over 230 diverse grapevine varieties. The department is responsible for the care and management of the vineyard and vinifies the wines in the wine cellar of the Palace. The focus on activities of the vineyard and winery lies at research and teaching. In the area of teaching there are modules on practical viticulture, fruit and post-harvest physiology and sensory analysis. Twice a year there is a wine sale from the winery of the University of Hohenheim directly in the Palace with seccos, red and white wines, the dates are before Christmas and before Easter (see announcements).
